Trailer Tire Suggestions

We've noticed a lot of people that run their trailer tires for way too long.  Depending on use the tread may actually outlast the tire life.

We actually had a trailer that we had a blow out on.  Needless to say it was no fun replacing the tire on the side of the road.  Plus we were in an area where tow trucks were not readily available.

A few things about trailer tires you'll want to be sure about.  Radial versus bias ply.  Since the price is about the same on most tires think of it this way.  Radials are better for highway and road use while bias ply are better for off road and farm use.  Keep it that simple it's much easier to understand, it's based on the construction differences of the two tires.

That being said the life of the tire.  Too many times we see customers with blowouts due to dry rot.  We never sell used trailer tires, you just don't know how long a tire has been used.  Look for dry rot, separation, and odd wear on your tires.

Also make sure that if it is wearing odd that you have had your axles serviced.  Just like a vehicle axles are important to have properly cared for.

Make sure you are using the correct load rated tire.  Overloading tires doesn't just increase a chance for blow out, it also can create abnormally quick tire wear and uneven at times.

Secure your load.  A load that shifts will put more strain on your tire.

Lastly look for high quality tires, they last longer.  Check out http://www.carlisletransportationproducts.com/ or ask a tire professional about Mastertrack tires, they come with a great warranty.
